GoSmarter's team is built around people who care about the craft of software engineering, the rigour of data science, and the practical reality of manufacturing. We are based primarily in Cardiff and Dublin, with team members across the UK and Ireland.

Our founders — Ruth Kearney and Steph Locke — bring together commercial and technical leadership in AI and manufacturing. Ruth leads on product and commercial strategy, with deep experience in the Irish and UK manufacturing markets. Steph is a recognised data science leader who has been shaping AI policy at European level and building practical AI tools for over a decade.

The engineering team builds across cloud infrastructure, web applications, and AI models. Our data science function works on the specific challenges of manufacturing data: unstructured documents, variable-quality sensor data, and the domain knowledge required to build models that production teams can trust.

<details>
<summary><h2>Our culture<span>▶</span></h2></summary>

We hire people who take their work seriously without taking themselves too seriously. We work collaboratively across disciplines — engineers work closely with data scientists, who work closely with customer success, who work closely with the manufacturers actually using the product. The feedback loop is short and the decisions that get made are better for it.

We are a small team, which means you can see the impact of your work quickly. It also means we do not have layers of management between a good idea and its implementation. If you spot something that could be better — in the product, in the process, or in the code — you are encouraged to say so and to help fix it.

</details>

<details>
<summary><h2>Diversity and inclusion<span>▶</span></h2></summary>

We are committed to building a team that reflects the breadth of talent available, not just the talent that looks like the tech sector's historical default. We have team members from Wales, Ireland, England, and beyond; from humanities and science backgrounds; at different career stages. We believe diverse teams build better products, and we work actively to maintain an environment where everyone can contribute at their best.

## Dr. Brian O’Halloran

> Dr. Brian O'Halloran is a highly experienced data scientist and leader with expertise across manufacturing, telecoms, insurance, and media industries in Ireland and the UK.
>

Brian is a highly experienced data scientist and leader that has worked across multiple sectors in his career in Ireland and the UK, including manufacturing, telecoms, insurance and newspapers. He is currently Data Science Team at Three Ireland, having previously worked in leadership roles for at companies such as Irish Manufacturing Research, Liberty Insurance and Telegraph Media Group.

Brian is currently working on developing data science and optimisation techniques/probabilistic approaches to production data, with a view to delivering production ready solutions via machine learning operations (ML Ops) frameworks.

His work at GoSmarter brings together two of the most important challenges in manufacturing data science: making probabilistic models that work reliably on messy production data, and deploying them in ways that engineers and production managers can actually use. He applies rigorous statistical techniques to problems that have historically been solved with spreadsheets and gut feel — and the results are measurably better decisions.

Brian is a recognised expert in data science leadership across Ireland and the UK. He has built and led data science teams in regulated industries where accuracy and explainability are non-negotiable, including insurance and media. That discipline carries directly into manufacturing, where the cost of a wrong prediction can be a scrapped batch, a failed audit, or a compliance breach.

He holds a doctorate and brings an academic rigour to applied data science that is rare in industry. His research interests include ML Ops frameworks, probabilistic approaches to production scheduling, and the integration of operational data with quality management systems.

## Samantha Dart MSc

## Liam Sproule

> Software engineering intern with aerospace engineering background, developing AI and cloud solutions for manufacturing
>

Starting with a passion for engineering and Aerospace Liam has broadened his career goals with his interests in software engineering. His interest in the software side of engineering started while undertaking his undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering, where he relied upon programming to carry out mathematical operations on large datasets.

This interest in software engineering blossomed while undertaking his MSc in Aerospace engineering, where he used a combination of programming and scripting to automate a tedious simulation problem for his dissertation. The simulation problem required running thousands of near identical simulations each with different input parameters. Based on the results of these simulations new parameters where produced that would then be run in the next batch of simulations. By producing a program that would run scripts at the appropriate times he greatly increased his operational efficiency. Instead of running a software simulation, interpreting the results, determining what the input parameters for the next simulation should be then running the next simulation every 20 minutes, he could just leave the program that he produced running for a month. This allowed a much larger data set to be produced, which improved the results of the dissertation.

Ever since his interest in software engineering has only grown, and he now wishes to pursue a career in the software engineering field.

>

Solange is a Quality Engineer who specialises in manufacturing. She has worked for 5 years in a shop-floor and is now looking to pivot her career to Data Science and AI applications. Her background in engineering and her passion for digitization is helping manufacturers implement digital solutions.

Solange's five years of shop-floor manufacturing experience means she understands the problems GoSmarter is solving from the inside. She has lived the reality of quality management, compliance documentation, and the daily friction of manual processes in a production environment. That experience is the foundation of her pivot into data science — she is not trying to impose technology on manufacturing from the outside, she is building tools for an environment she knows intimately.

Her background in quality engineering gives her a rigorous approach to data: understanding how production data is collected, where it is unreliable, and what decisions it genuinely needs to support. She applies that same rigour to building data science solutions, ensuring that the outputs are trustworthy and that the models reflect the real constraints of a manufacturing operation.

Solange is passionate about digitisation as a route to better working conditions as well as better business outcomes. When a quality engineer spends less time on manual data entry and more time on actual quality work, both the product and the job improve. That is the opportunity she sees in AI for manufacturing, and it is what drives her work at GoSmarter.

## Matthew Parker

Matthew is a Cloud Software Engineer at Nightingale HQ, bringing over 10 years of experience in software development. He specializes in Blazor web applications, with over 3 years of dedicated experience, and has extensive expertise in .NET and C# spanning more than a decade.

Matthew began his career as a Systems Designer at Jagex, where he honed his skills in creating complex systems. He later transitioned to roles focused on automation engineering, which paved the way for his current specialization in cloud solutions. Throughout his career, Matthew has made significant open-source contributions, including to the MudBlazor project, demonstrating his commitment to the development community and continuous learning.

In his current role at Nightingale HQ, Matthew leverages his deep knowledge of Blazor and .NET to develop robust cloud-based applications, driving innovation and efficiency.

Matthew's specialism in Blazor puts him at the forefront of modern .NET web development — building rich, interactive web applications without the overhead of a separate JavaScript framework. At GoSmarter, this translates into fast, maintainable front-end experiences that integrate tightly with the cloud infrastructure the platform runs on.

His open-source contributions, including work on the MudBlazor project, reflect a commitment to the wider developer community and a standard of engineering quality that goes beyond what any single commercial project requires. He brings that same standard to GoSmarter's codebase: clean, well-structured, and built to last rather than just built to ship.

Before focusing on cloud-native development, Matthew worked at Jagex as a Systems Designer — an environment famous for engineering at scale and for demanding software that has to work reliably under pressure. That background informs how he thinks about performance, reliability, and the long-term maintainability of the systems GoSmarter depends on.

## Joshua Mercurio

> Cloud Solutions Architect Engineer specializing in scalable cloud infrastructure and AI solution architecture for manufacturing
>

With a passion and strong background in technology, I begun my journey with a first-class degree in Mechanical Engineering, reinforcing engineering principles and applying them to practical applications through various projects.

Soon after, I began my year-long internship at Microsoft as a Cloud Solutions Architect. I specialized in areas such as DevOps, Power Platform, and cloud-native, creating end-to-end solutions, proof-of-concepts, and workshops to customers to help them leverage the power of the cloud and Azure services.

Currently, I am serving as a Cloud Solutions Engineer at Nightingale HQ, where I focus on bringing cloud infrastructure and AI technologies to the manufacturing industry.

As an Early in Career, I continuously seek opportunities to create transformative solutions and aim to contribute, impact, and empower others to do more with technology.

At GoSmarter, Joshua applies the cloud architecture skills he developed at Microsoft to the specific challenges of manufacturing — an industry that has historically been slow to adopt cloud-native approaches because the cost of downtime is so high and the tolerance for unreliable software is so low. He brings a rigorous, enterprise-grade approach to cloud infrastructure that gives manufacturers the confidence to modernise without disruption.

His internship at Microsoft gave him exposure to the full breadth of Azure's capabilities and the commercial disciplines needed to translate technical possibilities into solutions customers will actually adopt. Working directly with enterprise customers on proof-of-concepts and workshops, he learned how to communicate complex cloud architecture to non-technical stakeholders — a skill that is just as important in manufacturing as it is in tech.

Joshua is motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact early in his career. Manufacturing is one of the industries where better technology can make the fastest practical difference — reducing waste, improving margins, and removing the kind of tedious manual work that nobody should be doing in 2025. That is the work GoSmarter does, and it is the work he is committed to.

## Laura Dernie

> Freelance personal assistant and Founder of My Discombobulated Brain
>

Freelance personal assistant.

Founder of [My Discombobulated Brain](https://mydiscombobulatedbrain.com/)

Laura brings a unique perspective to the GoSmarter blog — the lived experience of managing complex organisations without the benefit of a traditional corporate support structure. As a freelance personal assistant and the founder of My Discombobulated Brain, she writes with authority on productivity, workplace accessibility, and the practical challenges of running a business efficiently.

Her contributions to the GoSmarter content programme focus on the human side of digital transformation: how tools need to work for the people using them, not just the people specifying them. She writes about scheduling, admin automation, and the small inefficiencies that add up to wasted hours — exactly the problems GoSmarter is built to solve.

My Discombobulated Brain, her personal platform, explores the intersection of neurodiversity, productivity, and professional life — making her a particularly insightful voice on why one-size-fits-all software often fails the people who need the most support.

## Mia Hatton - Data Scientist

> Budding data scientist with an entrepreneurial and science communication background.
>

Mia is an experienced science communicator and trainer who is now merging these talents to become a Data Scientist. She is currently studying for her Data Science degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University and is putting it also into practice as an apprentice in Nightingale HQ. Alongside a science degree from the Open University, she has a number of years of experience in presenting, science content development and training consultancy across several countries including the Czech Republic, Norway, Malaysia and her home of Wales.

In 2015 she co-founded Letterbox Lab, offering a series of innovative science kits designed to help families to play with science. Letterbox Lab was named ‘Retail Start-up of the Year’ at the Wales Start-up Awards 2019. Outside of work, Mia enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons and caring for her curious bearded dragon, Bert.

At GoSmarter, Mia applies her science communication background to one of the harder problems in data science: making models and results comprehensible to the people who need to act on them. In manufacturing, that means production managers and quality engineers who need to understand outputs clearly enough to make decisions, not just see a number from a black box.

Her work spans data analysis, model development, and the translation of findings into recommendations that are genuinely usable on the shop floor. She combines technical rigour with a communicator's instinct for what matters — and the ability to explain why.

Mia's co-founding of Letterbox Lab, a science kit business that won Retail Start-up of the Year at the Wales Start-up Awards 2019, demonstrates an entrepreneurial streak that sits alongside her academic work. She understands both what it takes to build something from scratch and how to communicate complex ideas to a broad audience — skills that are directly relevant to helping manufacturers understand and trust AI-driven insights.

## Muhammad Saad

Data Science Intern (R&D) building an event-driven cutting-stock optimisation service on Microsoft Azure, integrating NVIDIA cuOpt to efficiently process industrial optimisation tasks at scale.

Muhammad is developing and optimising algorithms to solve complex cutting-stock problems — a core challenge in the metals industry where raw bars of steel must be cut to customer-specified lengths with minimal waste. His work involves designing a cloud-native pipeline on Azure: an HTTP API built with Azure Functions receives cutting jobs, queues them via Azure Service Bus, and a Container Apps Job picks them up and runs the solver. The system uses KEDA event-driven autoscaling so compute resources scale to zero when idle, keeping costs low.

A key part of the work is benchmarking: Muhammad implements classical heuristics such as First Fit Decreasing as a baseline, then compares their results against NVIDIA cuOpt — a GPU-accelerated optimisation engine — to quantify the performance and material savings achievable with AI-powered solving. On representative test cases, cuOpt achieves near-optimal solutions that reduce bar consumption by up to 17% compared to the heuristic baseline, translating directly into reduced material waste and cost for manufacturers.

Alongside solver development, Muhammad performs data analysis tasks including data cleaning, preprocessing, and validation to ensure high-quality inputs and reliable optimisation outputs. He follows engineering best practices throughout: the codebase is covered by an automated CI/CD pipeline with ruff linting and an 80% test coverage gate enforced on every pull request.

Muhammad is studying Computer Engineering and brings a strong interest in the intersection of cloud infrastructure, operations research, and applied AI. At GoSmarter he works within the R&D function, contributing to the technical foundation of products that help manufacturers make better use of their raw materials.

## Phil Leach

Agentic AI Engineer building autonomous document processing pipelines and intelligent automation for metals manufacturers. Phil designs and implements AI agent systems that analyse, classify, and extract data from industrial documents — mill test certificates, material data sheets, and compliance records — reducing manual processing and improving data quality across the supply chain.

His current focus is the Agentic Document Analysis Pipeline at GoSmarter: a system that routes unknown or low-confidence mill certificates to an AI agent for structured analysis, sample accumulation, and automated training data generation. The pipeline uses GPT-4.1 with structured output validation to identify suppliers, extract field mappings, and build the labelled datasets needed to train dedicated extraction models — closing the loop between production classification and continuous model improvement.

Phil works across the full stack of the AI services platform: Python Container App Jobs on Azure, Service Bus message routing, Azure Document Intelligence custom classifiers, and the CI/CD pipelines that test, build, and deploy each service. He brings a methodical, research-driven approach to engineering — investigating established patterns before implementing, writing comprehensive tests, and documenting decisions so the team can continue without a phone call.

Before joining GoSmarter, Phil built experience in AI systems engineering and infrastructure automation, with a focus on making complex AI capabilities reliable and observable in production environments.

## Remin Franklin Eliyas

AI Engineer specialising in MTC extraction and OCR model evaluation. Responsible for testing multiple document intelligence solutions, benchmarking performance across accuracy, latency, and robustness metrics, and delivering structured comparative analyses to support model selection and optimisation.

Remin focuses on the practical challenge of making AI work reliably on real manufacturing documents — mill test certificates, material data sheets, and compliance records that vary enormously in format, quality, and completeness. His work directly supports GoSmarter's MillCert Reader product, which automates the extraction of chemical and mechanical property data from steel certificates.

His evaluation process is rigorous: testing multiple OCR and document intelligence models against the same datasets, measuring accuracy on structured fields, tolerance for poor scan quality, and the consistency of outputs across certificate types from different mills and standards bodies. The goal is not just finding the model that scores highest in a benchmark, but finding the one that production teams can actually trust.

Remin holds a Masters in Data Science and brings a methodical, evidence-based approach to model selection. He is part of the core engineering team at GoSmarter and works closely with the product and customer success functions to ensure AI performance translates into real-world reliability for manufacturers.

## Shaun Faulkner

> Technologist with a passion for full stack engineering.
>

Shaun is a Software Engineer at Nightingale. He started his career as a data analyst and worked in logistics and security analytics. His interest in web development led him to setup his own IT consultancy where he provided remote/onsite support to clients. He is in the final year of a BSc degree in Computer Science with Open University and his wheelhouse is Python, which he has been using for years.

Outside of work he enjoys the odd endurance event and is a first responder volunteer.

Shaun's transition from data analyst to full-stack software engineer gives him a perspective that is rare in pure engineering roles — he understands the data that the software needs to work with, not just the code. At Nightingale HQ he worked on backend systems and data pipelines, applying his Python expertise to build tools that helped manufacturing businesses get more value from their existing data.

His time running an IT consultancy gave him direct experience of the challenges SMEs face with technology: limited budgets, limited internal resource, and systems that were never designed to work together. That experience shaped how he thinks about building software — practical, maintainable, and focused on solving real problems rather than impressing other developers.

Alongside his degree in Computer Science with the Open University, Shaun continued to develop his skills in Python and web development, pursuing both the academic foundation and the practical application in parallel. Outside of work, he volunteers as a first responder — a commitment that reflects the same practical, people-first values he brings to his engineering work.

>

Tyree is a Customer Success Manager at GoSmarter, working directly with metals manufacturers to ensure they get real value out of the platform from day one. His background in Solutions Architecture means he understands both the technical side of deployment and the human side of change — which is exactly what manufacturers need when they're moving away from spreadsheets and manual processes.

He brings empathy and clarity to every customer engagement. Where other people see complexity, Tyree finds the simple thread that makes a solution stick. He's the person in the room who translates what the product does into what it actually means for a production manager's day.

Before joining GoSmarter, Tyree built his career understanding how enterprise systems connect and how to make technology work for the people using it, not just the people specifying it. That experience shapes how he approaches onboarding, training, and ongoing customer support at GoSmarter.

He is passionate about outcomes that are human-centred — not just technically correct — and believes the best AI implementation is one that the people on the shop floor actually want to use.
