Why metals inventory is different
Metals inventory is not a simple count of items in a location. A steel stockholder or fabricator holds material by grade, size, heat number, and certificate reference. A coil of 3mm mild steel is not interchangeable with a coil of 3mm S355 — even if they look identical on the rack.
Material committed to a live order is not available for another job, even if it is physically present. Offcuts below a minimum usable length need tracking separately from prime stock. Without this level of detail, your “inventory” figure is a guess, not a fact.
