European Commission Selects Nightingale HQ to Shape AI Policy

Nightingale HQ joins EU focus group on AI alongside 100 European SMEs to monitor the impact of AI adoption and shape policy.
FG AI now has 100 SMEs

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the European DIGITAL SME Alliance have come together to set up a focus group on AI which will shape policy and monitor the impact of AI adoption across the EU. We are excited to announce that Nightingale HQ have been selected to join the focus group, along with 100 other SMEs from across Europe.

Nightingale HQ CEO Steph Locke added "We are delighted to participate as an SME voice. AI has the ability to impact all aspects of our lives from social, economic and cultural perspectives, therefore it's important that we get policy right. We have been selected because of our high level of AI expertise and we will discuss key issues around AI and the challenges to AI adoption.".

Joining the group comes at a good time when the Commission is investing heavily in AI and has increased its annual investment by 70%, bringing it up to €1.5 billion between 2018 and 2020. The aim of this investment is to:

  • Strengthen and connect AI research centres across Europe;
  • Support the development of an “AI-on-demand” platform, providing access to EU resources for users;
  • Support the development of AI applications in key sectors.

Recently elected leader of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen has promised to deliver on AI legislation. She recognises that AI opens up a new world and that it is important that this world has rules. In addition, she has declared a large portion of the EU's €750 billion Covid-19 recovery fund will be spent on digital projects, with a key focus on industrial data, AI and infrastructure.

The focus group will generate valuable feedback and help define the current state of adoption, use and impact of AI and other emerging technologies. Over the following 3-5 years, they will help to build a better understanding of AI in society.

FAQs

What does the European Commission selection mean?

Being selected by the European Commission to contribute to AI policy-making is a distinction that only a handful of companies in any EU member state achieve. The selection recognises that Nightingale HQ has both relevant expertise — having built and deployed AI tools for SMEs — and the ability to contribute constructively to a policy process that benefits from diverse, grounded perspectives.

The AI Marketplace is designed to be the EU’s central resource for AI tools and solutions — a curated directory that helps European businesses, governments, and citizens find AI solutions that meet EU standards for transparency, reliability, and ethical conduct. Contributing to the development of this resource puts Nightingale HQ in a position to influence how AI tools are evaluated, described, and made accessible to European businesses.

What is the policy context: AI for European SMEs?

The European Commission’s AI strategy explicitly prioritises making AI accessible to European SMEs — recognising that the benefits of AI should not be concentrated in large technology companies and enterprises. Nightingale HQ’s work is directly aligned with this priority: practical AI tools that work for SMEs without requiring large IT teams or enterprise budgets.

Contributing to the policy process ensures that the needs and capabilities of AI SMEs — companies like Nightingale HQ itself — are represented in decisions about regulation, standards, and support programmes that will shape the European AI landscape for years to come.

What is the Network of AI Excellence?

The European Network of AI Excellence that Nightingale HQ is now part of connects AI companies, research institutions, and policy organisations across the EU. This network provides access to research, funding opportunities, and collaboration partnerships that support continued innovation. For GoSmarter, membership in this network is both a recognition of the quality of the company’s work and an enabler of future partnerships and projects.
