Whilst in India for DPS10, I got to discuss and explore my thoughts with the nifty Leila Etaati and Andy Leonard. They helped me understand that what I needed to do was something that would enable Locke Data and others to surface their knowledge and services around data science readiness to organisations around the world.

FAQs

What is Data Platform Summit (DPS10)?

Data Platform Summit is one of Asia’s largest data and analytics conferences, bringing together data professionals from across the globe to share knowledge and best practice. DPS10 in Bangalore in 2019 attracted data scientists, engineers, and business leaders working with SQL Server, Azure, Power BI, and data science tooling across the Microsoft ecosystem.

Attending DPS10 was part of Steph Locke’s active involvement in the international data community — building relationships with practitioners around the world who are working on similar problems in different contexts. The conversations with Leila Etaati and Andy Leonard that she describes were formative in shaping what became the platform approach underlying GoSmarter: rather than helping one organisation at a time with bespoke consulting work, building a platform that surfaces knowledge and capability to many organisations at once.

What are the connections made at DPS10?

Leila Etaati is a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) and data science consultant based in New Zealand, known for her work on machine learning and data visualisation. Andy Leonard is a data engineer and author based in the US, known for his work on SQL Server Integration Services and data architecture.

Both are recognised practitioners in the global data community, and the conversations Steph describes with them — around how to scale the impact of data science expertise beyond individual consulting engagements — reflect the kind of strategic thinking that led directly to the creation of GoSmarter.

Why India mattered?

The data and analytics conference circuit in India represents one of the largest concentrations of data science talent and enthusiasm in the world. Being present at DPS10 connected Nightingale HQ to a global community of practitioners, and helped establish early credibility with an international audience. GoSmarter is built to work for manufacturers anywhere in the world — and connections like those made at DPS10 reflect that global ambition.
