In information technology (IT), remote support tools are IT tools and software that enable an IT technician or a support representative to connect to a remote computer from their consoles via the Internet and work directly on the remote system. Although its main focus is the access to computers located anywhere in the world, the remote support applications also provide features like file transfer, desktop sharing, file synchronization, command line or guest accessibility.

How remote support actually works

Most remote support tools follow the same basic pattern: a small agent or session-sharing application runs on the machine that needs help, the technician connects to it over an encrypted channel, and β€” with the end user’s permission β€” gets a live view of the screen and, usually, control of the mouse and keyboard. Common capabilities on top of that core screen-share include:

  • File transfer, to move a log file, a configuration file, or a fix directly onto the remote machine without email attachments
  • Session recording, for audit purposes in regulated environments or to build a library of how a particular issue was resolved
  • Unattended access, where a technician can reconnect to a pre-authorised machine without someone at the other end clicking “accept” each time β€” useful for servers or headless equipment
  • Multi-platform support, since a support team may need to reach Windows, macOS, Linux, or increasingly industrial control systems and embedded devices, all through one tool

The alternative β€” sending an engineer to site β€” is slower and far more expensive per incident. For anything that’s fundamentally a software or configuration problem rather than a hardware fault, remote support usually resolves the issue faster and at a fraction of the cost of a site visit.

Remote support for manufacturing software and equipment

Manufacturing businesses run a mix of on-premise systems (ERP, MES, PLCs, scanners on the factory floor) and cloud software, often across multiple sites with lean IT teams. Remote support is how most of that gets kept running day to day.

Software vendor support. When a SaaS platform used on the shop floor β€” an inventory system, a cutting optimiser, a quality management tool β€” has an issue, the vendor’s support team typically resolves it remotely: reviewing logs, reproducing the issue in a test environment, or occasionally sharing a screen with the customer to walk through a configuration change.   • Is unattended access available for servers and unmanned equipment, and is it properly access-controlled?

  • For a software vendor’s support offering specifically: what’s the response time commitment, and does support come included or as a paid tier?
